The larger painting is from Hines Road looking towards the West and on the south end of the pond (not in the painting) there are huge old trees where Great Blue Herons build their nests in the spring. I still have trouble with the idea of these large birds perching in the tops of trees, but they do. Quite a sight! The little painting with the red barn is across the road from the pond. I don't really think it's part of the park, but an outbuilding on a farm, but I thought it was a great scene, so I painted it. Did some pen and ink with watercolor wash on it and am very pleased with it. Well, I guess this catches me up on my blog right now. I had the reference photo at work and one day last month we had a bad summer storm and the electric went out. There's not much you can do in today's offices without electricity, so I got the photo out, sketched the rose and started painting it by the light coming in a window with my little bitty Windsor Newton travel set with about a #4 brush, one petal at a time. When the lights came on, I had these greyish pink flower petals, so I put another glaze on top of the few I had done, finished it and here it is! Maybe I should paint in the dark more often???

Hoover Dam (Westerville OH)

I've been doing a lot of landscapes the last couple months. We live about a mile from Hoover Dam and one Saturday morning early I went there to do a couple quick landscapes. I did two but this is the only one I like. It's still not a "gasper," but at least I'm not tearing them up anymore and there's a lot I do like about it. I got a real "feel" of the place and the peacefulness of early morning on/near water. I think I'll frame it for a plein air showing coming up next month in Worthington OH.

My Favorite Cup

Another DPW Challenge -- this one on time! I had been struggling with another painting and after lunch, I decided I needed a break! I love to do pen and ink with watercolor washes and that's what I decided to do with a few cherries & a grape I had left over -- along with my favorite mug -- and what was left in my palette. Thanks DWP -- what fun! It shows me I really can paint loosely. The problem is, when I'm working on a "serious painting" I tighten up like a little drum! I've been watching some w/c videos on U-Tube and am really inspired to loosen up. If you've followed my blog, you know that landscapes aren't my strong suit, but I am determined to conquer this monster! I've not been going as often as I should, but I can't learn anything that way, can I? Anyway, I always take a photo of the scene I'm painting just to compare later on and thought I'd include that along with my painting for you to see. My friend Nancy reminded me that I can change the scene -- after all it's my interpretation of the scene for what hopefully will end up being an entertaining painting for those viewing it. My husband, who is an excellent watercolorist, also suggested "fading out" the ends of the tree branches to make them appear thinner (which they are in real life). I have learned to see so many things as an artist that I would never have seen before. I've spent hours deciding what "color" a blue spruce tree really is. What fun! Anyway, this is a learning experience and I'm grateful for your comments and suggestions.

Colonel who????

This is a DPW challenge that goes way back. I sketched it on time, but didn't get it painted until just a couple days ago. I love chickens. I've painted two roosters (one of which sold) for a Christmas present last year. We had chickens when I was little and then again as a young parent. My kids & I were going down the road at Easter (probably 1973?) and there was a sign "peeps for sale." Well, we went home with 24 of the little buggers and immediately set up a peep nursery. What a hoot! Anyway, here's my effort. My husband said, "That chicken's got an attitude!" I named the painting before I even started it. I thought her expression was wonderful. A well known painter -- whose name I can't remember -- said he always named his paintings before starting them to remind himself what he wanted to impart to the viewer. What do you think? Does the title depict the chicken's expression?

Tomatoes & Crock

This is another "lunchbox" painting that I did from the Daily Paintworks blog. This challenge was a "one stroke painting." Put one stroke down, change colors, add another color, another stroke, and keep doing the same until the painting's done. I thought this would be next to impossible for a watercolorist, but if you wait till one color is dry before adding the next color, either on top or beside, it works pretty good. I was very pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I think it looks bright, happy and crisp. Would never thought of trying something like this and am really enjoying being pushed beyond my comfort zone. Really anxious to see what others think.

Zippo Lighter

This is another DPW challenge. Gives me a subject and a deadline that motivates me to paint. This one is from the Daily Paint Works website, an old car in Florida. The painting seems to be a little softer than the picture, but couldn't get them to match perfectly, so here it is anyway. It's another small one, 5 x 7", watercolor on 140 lb. paper, done on my lunch hour. I have a little bitty travel watercolor set my husband got me a long time ago that I just keep at work now. Can't wait for the weather to warm up and maybe get outside and paint at lunch time.

The Ice Has Broken??

This is the first painting I've done for a while. Can't seem to get the motivation and the time to paint to happen together. Hope this breaks the painting ice. This is a Paint and Draw Together challenge that is waaaay past the due date, but I kept the photo and sketched it anyway. I'm starting to do small paintings that I can complete on my lunch hour. It seems to be working for me, getting my brushwork back to where it was and I'm really enjoying it. This little painting is 6 x 9" and, as always, is watercolor on 140 lb. coldpress.

Lake Acquitaine

I've been lazy about posting to my blog, but just had to get this one in. It's from the Paint and Draw Together blogspot that I enjoy so much. Very challenging pictures posted monthly to interpret in our own way. I really enjoyed this one and reminded me of my favorite vacation spot with my mom and dad when I was growing up MANY years ago, Indian Lake, Ohio. Went the first two weeks of June every year -- got my first 2 wheel bike there, caught fish small enough to fit inside a milk bottle (they were glass way back then). We got the same cottage year after year and the fishing was great! There was an amusement park and a wonderful skating rink. Wish I had some good pictures so that I could do a painting of that. I'm missing so many pictures and no way to retrieve them now. That should be a lessen to all of us to record the special moments as they happen and make sure to give copies to those who care. Anyway, enough of that.

My husband fixed me a great new painting spot when I was at work the other day - actually made me cry when I saw it. You know what? I haven't painted in it yet - I've sat at the chair and looked around, but I think I may be a little intimidated by it. I've got an outside art fair coming up in August and I plan to do some new painting for that -- have a couple pictures ready and will be working in my new space next week and am really looking forward to it.

Been really hot in Ohio and haven't been doing plein air for the last 2-3 weeks. My plein air buddy but a new condo and she's been busy and my husband, my son & I have been trying to get a lot of yard work done that's been neglected two years when my husband got very sick. We're making huge progress, so I can't use that for an excuse much longer.

Thanks for looking, maybe some more news real soon.

Plein Air

Saturday was another plein air session for the group of painters I paint with. A member of the group signs up to "host" a Saturday. This member choose the Buzzard's Roost Lake area of Slate Run Metro Park in Canal Winchester Ohio. It was a cool, drizzly/rainy day, but we all kind of huddled together in a large picnic shelter and painted anyway. (We're a hearty group!) Those of you who are following my blog know that I have been struggling with landscapes in general and plein air just adds one more level to it. I think my hard work , blood, sweat & tears may be paying off. They've gone from horrible to not too bad, to "you're getting there, just keep trying." I kind of like this one. Comments and critiques from those talented landscape/plein artists reading this are more than welcome.

Show Paintings

The Central Ohio Watercolor Society Spring Show opened in

Delaware OH on Sunday at the Delaware Arts Castle. The artist is Lela Stankovic and it's new and quite impressive. The painting is from a picture she posted and anyone who wants to can join in with their interpretation and then participate in some great critiques. This is the April photo. I think she's going to be posting another photo on April 11. This is a great way to push your painting, maybe stepping outside an established comfort zone and growing.

Plein Air

Last year was my first time painting en plein air and I couldn't believe how hard it was for me. At first I couldn't even find anything to paint. There was nothing but green trees, green grass, brown trees, brown grass, brown dirt! What were those other painters looking at anyway? Towards the end of the year I was actually seeing light and shadow, shapes, and great compositions. I then quickly discovered that seeing them and executing them were two completely different things. I paint with a group of about 10-16 people on Saturday mornings and afterwards we have a critique. I should have been embarrassed to put my paintings up there (and I was) but I really wanted to master this monster! Why was it so different than painting in the studio? Oh, how naive! Anyway I'm out there again this year. Last Saturday was the first paintout of the year. I scouted the site earlier in the week and took a photo of the scene with the curving road and the pine tree on the right side (bottom painting) and painted it in the studio. The top painting with the 3 guys playing frisbee golf (which you probably can't see) I painted on site. I can really tell the difference, but I'm pretty pleased with the plein air painting. Realize I've got a looooong way to go, but you should have seen last year's painting! Anybody else have trouble adjusting to plein air?

Little Bitty Paintings

I think sometimes the hardest part of any job is starting it. That's where I was about February with my painting. I went to Barnes & Noble on my lunch hour one day and picked up a copy of my favorite magazine, "Watercolor Artist" for some inspiration. I usually read it from cover to cover, but start with the "Creativity Workshop." This article happened to be about changing the way you paint - if you paint large, try small; if you paint in oils, try pastel, etc., etc. I had gotten some Art Card paper (2-1/2" x 3-1/2") probaby 2 years ago and had never used it. I decided that would be my change - to go from 16x20 down to itty bitty. Wow! What fun. From left to right is: Mr. Gridley, our beloved 15-year-old cat that we lost 2 years ago; Colorful Fish, a ceramic pitcher; and Autum at Alum Creek. I submitted them all to the Creativity Workshop challenge and my little landscape won an Honorable Mention! What a shot in the arm! I guess that got me off dead center and I started painting again. The website for Creativity Workshop Activites at Watercolor Artist is www.artistsnetwork.com/article/creativity-workshop.

Cold Little Bird

This little guy was sitting on top of the shutter
on my front porch on one of our very cold February
Ohio days all fluffed up trying to keep warm. I think it was in Lockbourne, Ohio, which is on the south side of Columbus. It really intrigued me and I stopped to get a photo. I am not a landscape artist -- not by choice, but I seem to have a mental block and they just don't work. I had this "finished" for some time, but there was just something wrong with it. I decided one morning that it was "dead," just a building all by itself sitting on the ground. So I added the man and some birds on the wires and I think it came to life. I got sidetracked quite a bit on my painting, although I have done some, just been really lazy posting it. Those of you who have been following know that my husband, at some point, has to have aortic valve replacement surgery, just not sure when. He keeps going back to the doctor and having scans and keeps getting a reprieve for a few months. The longer the better, but it sure keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Then, of course, things came to another halt for Christmas. Then the long, cold, snowy Ohio winter that broke all records for snowfall in February! I did submit these two paintings to Courage Cards for their consideration, but they didn't choose them this year. "Santas Six" and "Snowmen." Pen and ink with a watercolor wash, my favorite fun, casual way to paint. Maybe that was the problem? As always, I'm anxious to hear your comments. Will be adding posts regularly now.

"APPLESAUCE"

These are the two paintings I'm going to enter in the Anthem Show at the Worthington Area Art League in Worthington Ohio. The theme of the show is "Applesauce". I am a very concrete, "in-the-box" artist, so the abstract is waaaaay out in left field for me. I call it "The Eye of My Apple." I'm anxious to hear your comments.

I took the picture of the candy apples (pictured below) when my son and I went to the Lancaster Fair about 2 years ago. It's simply called "Candy Apples." I guess I used all of my creativity painting the picture, so I had none left when it came to titling it! A lot of my paintings have special meaning for me and I take all of my own reference photos. Anyway, good, bad, or whatever, let me know what you think of them.

RATHER THAN MAKE A CHOICE....

I think I'll have one of each!!! I can't believe how long it's been since I've added a painting to my blog. Between Karin's schedule and mine, it's been hectic. This was pure fun. Did everybody watch the video on Theibold? What talent! Anyway, hope to be adding some paintings for an upcoming art show for the Worthington Area Art League called "Applesauce" within the next week or so. Just got a new printer and I did something wrong - obviously - because I lost about 5 pictures on my camera card! One of them was a great shot of a baby praying mantis on a hydrangea blossom. I had big plans for that one -- even had the painting named: Hydrangea Prayer -- oh, well.

MOSES

This is a Different Strokes image. Karin's blog suggested that you do the sketch a couple of times so you'd get to "know the figure," the shape, roundness, etc. Well, this painting is the third sketch and I not only got to know his shape, I got to know him! Maybe I've been sniffing too much maskit (or brush cleaner), but this is Moses. He's been on a long, tiring, but very satisfying journey. Maybe he's been doing some disaster cleanup, but he's on his way home now. He's very tired, but you can see the little twinkle in his eye and he's very proud of himself and what he's accomplished.

This is one of my favorite techniques - pen & ink with watercolor wash. The background has a light blue and gold wash on it, but it doesn't seem to show up on the blog. I thought about darkening it, but I like the painting, so I think I'll leave it alone. I really had a good time with this one. Hope you like it!

GREEN TOMATOES

I was completely unprepared for painting night, so on the way home from work I decided I'd go out to the garden and snap a picture of my tomatoes. I usually stay away from a "green" painting -- in fact I know artists who won't paint green at all! Anyway, keeping with the "push myself" concept I've adopted lately, I thought it would be a challenge. It was a two-stage painting, most everything but the yellow highlights were done the first night. I have a habit of propping my new paintings in a chair at the foot of my bed so I can look at them first thing the next morning when I'm waking up. That's when I decided it needed the yellow highlights. Anyway, think it's a "keeper." Took the picture just in time -- two of the tomatoes turned red and now are only a delicious memory!

GALLERY NEWS. . .

I have eight paintings hung at the North Main Gallery in Mount Vernon, Ohio (about 30 miles NE of Columbus). If you're in the area, stop in and check them out. Neat little restaurants close by, and an old picturesque town and countryside. I'm posting five of the paintings -- I think my computer ate the pictures of the other three! This is my first really serious relationship with a gallery, so I'm pretty excited about it!

As you can see, I'm interested in a wide range of subjects and enjoy painting everyday objects with an artist's eye. In one of the workshops I took, the subject of the painting was a fireplug! Can you imagine? It turned out to be one of my favorite paintings! But because it wasn't my photo and there are (were) at least 10 other fireplugs in the class, I just keep it for my own enjoyment! Anyway, here's part of who I am and what I enjoy. Hope you like it! Please feel free to share your thoughts, suggestions, critiques, etc. That's how I keep growing!

MISTY MORNING ROWER

I really enjoyed doing this painting. This artist looked at a painting and said, "I'm sure there's a very fine painting in there somewhere." Well, after I cropped about 2 inches off the left side and an inch or so off the top, I've got the best painting I could find on my particular piece of paper! Not exactly what I had in mind, but I'm pretty happy with it.

I have always struggled with landscapes. Kind of a mental block I think. I have taken a landscape workshop 3 times and still don't feel comfortable with landscapes. I think overall I'm a pretty good artist, but this just stops me cold. I think "trees, barns, water, etc." instead of just different shapes and colors and I freeze artistically. Anybody else have that problem? Think I'll really hit it hard for the rest of the year and see if I can't get a handle on it. Any suggestions?

After the holiday I'm going to post some of my paintings. Have two in a show at the High Road Gallery in Worthington Ohio right now. Will post those soon. Just finished two that I really like and I'll post thoses also. Have to take a picture of the latest one that I finished last nite. So far all that's on my blog are the Different Strokes paintings and I'd like to share some of my others too. I'd like to set up a gallery, but not sure how to go about that. Does it have to be on a web page instead of a blog? Maybe a separate blog?

Expect to be very busy at work for the next couple weeks, so thought I'd better get this posted now. Happy Memorial Day to everyone. There are a couple flea markets in my area over the Memorial Day holiday, so I'll be out taking pictures for more paintings.

I am excited about this painting. This is my second attempt. The first one was very disappointing. I knew what I wanted to do when I started it and the painting just did its own thing, which was the exact opposite of what I saw in my mind - very overworked and dark. Put it aside for a while, tried again and viola! I think your eye travels in the "magic triangle" through the painting, there's a lot left to imagine and it's very fresh! Well, enough about me, what do you think? I have affectionately renamed it "Ferret Face, Bubble Butt and Pinhead at the Beach." I wasn't going to post it, but decided, "Oh, what the heck!" People aren't my strong suit, but if I only posted the best, you might not hear from me for a while. I'm going through a phase of really having to push myself to paint. My husband's been sick and we've been waiting for a year now to see if and when he needs to have valve replacement surgery. It's like always waiting for the other shoe to fall. He's 78 and really doing quite well now without the surgery.... When I do paint, I'm in my own little world and escape for a while. It's just making myself get out in the studio and pick up a brush that's been the problem. I've been painting a diner series and the second one is about done. Think I'll post them both and see what you think. Anyway, wish I were at the beach right now!

Girls Night Out. This is another Different Strokes From Different Folks - Karin Jurick photo. She is the most creative person I know of when it comes to taking photos. I'm usually a very much "in the box" person and she pushes me to think outside my comfort zone. I thought about the composition for about 4 days, sketched it yesterday afternoon and then when the house was quiet and everyone was asleep (about midnight) I got out my paints and went to work. It went very quickly and I'm pleased with the way it turned out. I am not a portrait artist, but I think I got a good "mannequin" look. As always, I'm anxious for your comments. Update: Just a note to let you know I submitted my painting of "Daddy's Shoes" (see photo below) to Bev Jozewiak's "Creativity Workshop" in Watercolor Artist Magazine last month and ended up as one of the four runners-up! Needless to say I think that's quite an honor for me. I think you can see this if you just type "Erma Pierce Watercolors" in the search block and then click on the link on the screen. I love to paint objects that are ordinary to try to show that even every day objects can become art forms. Give me a rusty, paint faded anything and I'm happy for a few days! I tried a something a little different in leaving some of the background unpainted (or painted very faintly) and I really like the style. I read an article in this month's Watercolor Artist by Bev Jozewiak, and was really intrigued with her technique and tried to apply it here. Be anxious to hear your comments. But you know what? I think I do that anyway, right side up or upside down. I look for the masses, shapes and shadows, instead of painting or drawing preconceived notions of what a tree is supposed to look like. This was a real insight for me. I really appreciate all of Karin's hard work on this blog -- it's really challenging me in many ways and I'm learning a great deal about myself. It makes me interpret something that I would normally have just copied from the photograph. Anyway, here's my take on the "photo of the week". In my mind there's so many questions and unrest right now with the upcoming election, the state of the economy, crime, war, lack of accountability, etc., etc. This painting kind of painted itself. There were things that I knew just had to be included and this is how it ended up. I'll be happy to hear your thoughts.

NYSE Painting

This is only my second painting from Karin's Different Strokes project. The "Bean" I painted more or less as presented, changing a few colors here and there.

The NYSE really intrigued me -- how different it was when Karin took the picture and how it was at present. I tried to show the emotion that I was feeling in the uncertainty, despair and lack of activity with only one kiosk being lit and a disenchanted broker walking out of the picture. But the American flags were still standing, and that, to me, reminded us of who we were, what we had been through in the past and what was yet to come. God bless America!
